SUS, aka Zeus was a PAWS foster cat for over a year, and most everyone in PAWS got to know him pretty well. He was among the PAWS' first "official" injured rehabilitation animals. His story is so wonderful, that we thought he should have his own webpage! We will update the site fairly often, as we love to hear new things from SUS and the Vieiras, and we hope you will, too. You are welcome to send any comments to SUS about his page, he LOVES to hear stuff about himself (Jean does a great job of translating for him)!

In July of 2000, a nice woman brought a kitten to the shelter concerned that he had been injured. The kitten had a dent in his head and one eye was bulging. A PAWS member that was volunteering at the shelter fell in love with the little purring tabby and he became a PAWS kitten.

After some evaluation, the bulging eye had to be removed, and everything else checked out ok. The kitten stayed in a foster home for a bit, and was named Zeus. He was shown for adoption at PetsMart most every weekend, but no one wanted the little one-eyed kitten. He always purred and “head-butted” everyone that would come near him, but he was always passed over. As Zeus grew, his foster parents became very attached and he made friends wherever he went, but a permanent home was not found.

This is me shortly after I came to PAWS, you can't tell too much in this picture, but my left eye is bulgy and it hurt a lot.
This was me just after surgery  (my eye was removed, in case you couldn't tell)

August, 2000
This is me at PetsMart. I am playing with a dog named Glacier that was also up for adoption that weekend. That's my foster mom's lap I'm sitting on.

In February of 2001, Zeus had an accident with some cleaner; his tongue was severely blistered and a feeding tube had to be inserted so he could get nutrition until his tongue healed. After this incident, Zeus’ foster mom moved him into her home and he became part of the family. He remained available for adoption on the PAWS website, but no one really had any interest in him. Zeus’ foster mom told everyone they were missing out on the best cat in the world, but was happy to keep him. Finally, in September of 2001, PAWS received a call from a couple, the Vieiras, that ran a ministry called “Because HE Lives. . . Ministries”. They were looking for a “therapy cat” to take with them to nursing homes and had seen Zeus’ picture on the website with Santa Claus.

This is just me! I like to pose for the camera (sometimes).

This is my PAWS foster mom, Tracy, giving me a big smooch! I love kisses, but don't tell anyone! Guys don't like that sort of thing spread around!

This is me with Santa!
I told him that I had been very good!

They met him, and, of course, he was PERFECT!! The Vieiras adopted Zeus - a tearful goodbye for Zeus’ foster mom, but now he could show the world what a great cat (and soul) he is!

Zeus, now SUS (soos), which means to rejoice or to be happy in Hebrew, visits nursing homes with the Vieiras and another therapy dog, bringing smiles to lonely faces every week! God certainly had a plan for the little purring tabby!

This is part of what I do when I visit people. That's my new mom, Jean, holding me. She carries me around sometimes to let the people pet me and talk to me (when they aren't sure about holding me themselves).

I like to sit on people's laps when I visit them. That's my buddy, Caleb, that comes on the visits with me. The people like him a lot, too! (he doesn't get to sit in their laps, though)

Thanks so much to the Vieiras and Because HE Lives. . Ministries for the work they do, and for looking into that one eye and seeing the wonderful soul within!

Jean and Manny Vieira operate Because He Lives. . . Ministries. We are both ordained Ministers and incorporated Because HE Lives...Ministries about 7 years ago. We Pastor in 5 facilities. We provide Pastoral Care to Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility residents (in Tulsa / Broken Arrow area on a 24 / 7 basis), and incorporate Pet Therapy using dogs and cats in our ministry. During the week visitations are done with Sus and 1 or 2 of our Therapy Dogs, (Caleb, Gabriel, Angel, Cody). All of our Therapy Animals are "throw aways", the ones nobody wanted, coming from off the streets or from the pound.

Many of the residents had to give up their beloved pets when they went to a facility and really appreciate having Sus and his canine friends visit them.

We do not have a Website at this time. We can be reached at,
